实践中,It Will Fly! Milwaukee Art Museum Expansion by Santiago Calatrava and Kahler Slater Categories: Industry News , Project Under Construction Contributed by Kristen Richards June 13, 2001 (design architechture&gt Organic forms and cutting-edge technology are combined for a museum addition sure to put Milwaukee on the urban architectural (and cultural) map. (19 images) Santiago Calatrava's first U.S. commission, the monumental expansion of the Milwaukee Art Museum known as the Quadracci Pavilion, is -- finally -- in the final stages of construction. (Special exhibition galleries, the new museum store, and a 300-seat auditorium actually opened May 4th). Perhaps the most anticipated element of the 142,050-square-foot expansion is the Burke Brise Soleil, the moveable, wing-like sun screen that rests on top of the Museum's vaulted glass-enclosed reception hall and is raised and lowered to control heat and light in the structure. Although often acclaimed to be unprecedented in American architecture, there has been speculation that the 'moveable' might not be do-able, but those rumors can now be put to rest. On May 25th, the Museum announced that it has finalized manufacturing and installation plans for the signature component of the $75.1 million portion of the expansion. Calatrava, who is trained as both an engineer and an architect, has been authorized to engage Ingemetal, based in Zaragoza, Spain, to manufacture the Brise Soleil's 72 fins from steel and to oversee the installation of those fins in September and October. Working with leading industry firms, the Museum studied and tested carbon fiber fins but determined that the material was too complex and expensive, and caused too much uncertainty in setting a completion date. The Museum then released this part of the project to Calatrava, who became licensed as an engineer in Wisconsin, allowing him to prepare the working drawings for fabricating the Brise Soleil. The latest word is that the installation will be complete by October. The new steel design meets the Museum's weight, wind, and other design standards, as well as project budget parameters. With fin size ranging in length from 26 to 105 feet, the Brise Soleil wingspan spreads 217 feet at its widest point (wider than a Boeing 747-400 airplane), and weighs 90 tons. Other signature elements of the design include the Reiman Bridge, a 250-foot-long suspended pedestrian bridge that links downtown Milwaukee directly to the lakefront and the Museum. The bridge features a distinctive 200-foot angled mast with cables and reflects Calatrava's unique experience in bridge design throughout Europe (and reportedly soon in Dallas). The Museum's main entrance leads into a parabolic-shaped, glass-enclosed reception hall with a 90-foot ceiling enclosed by the Burke Brise Soleil. The original 1996 budget of $35 million was increased to $100 million to include the renovation of the two existing museum buildings designed by Eero Saarinen (1957), and Milwaukee-based David Kahler/Kahler Slater (1975) -- Kahler Slater is also the Quadracci Pavilion Architect of Record and the Cudahy Gardens, designed by noted Boston landscape architect Dan Kiley. The Museum's expansion provides a 30 percent increase in overall gallery space, from 90,000 to 117,000 square feet. Many of the public spaces previously located in the existing Museum buildings will now be housed in the new Quadracci Pavilion, creating room for presenting more works from permanent collection, many of which have not be on view in years. 'This is a monumental project, encompassing an exceptional architectural and engineering masterpiece, dramatic new gallery space, expanded facilities and visitor amenities, and elegant public gardens,' said Russell Bowman, director of the Milwaukee Art Museum. 'We look forward to joining our visitors, from around the corner and across the world, in celebrating the new Milwaukee Art Museum.' The Museum will open the rest of the Quadracci Pavilion, including the glass-enclosed reception hall, the underground parking garage, 100-seat cafe, and the Reiman Bridge on September 14. The Cudahy Gardens are expected to be complete in October, just in time for gala opening celebrations.。
