实践中，First year unit 1 Shin Egashira; Lucy Tilley Actualities We would like to learn from the processes of making things, drawing things, describing things and representing other forms of reality. The unit will explore new techniques that will allow us to transform something that has been constructed from an individual viewpoint into another form of reality. We will investigate processes for transforming materials – not only visible processes, but also the invisible ones of gravity, slowness, degrees of darkness, sound, touch, memory and motion. In this way we will give new concepts and locations to that which we recognise as our living space. This year we will focus on the concept of an architecture of travel and containment. The ship and the store house can be seen as preliminary – or perhaps archetypal – architectures, and as means by which we might describe the dynamism and diversity of the city. Vessel for the city To that end, our first project will be the construction of a vessel that responds to the changing flow of the city’ tide. We will study ship construction processes, and observe and register the changing climate of the landscape of the city. Unstable ground in London will provide our test site. Container for landscape Our second project will explore memory, both individual and collective. We will study a series of forms for storehouses – both their history and cultures, and the techniques by which they encapsulate time, becoming structures for stability by both filtering and accumulating memories. The unit trip will provide an opportunity to study some built examples. Combining the ideas of vessel and container, our final design project will speculate about new forms of between in spaces – bridging private and collective space, containing ideas of stability and transition, something ephemeral yet solid and tactile – an articulation of the nature of the city as a ship and storage facility. Third week (5th-11th November) Card box making We recorded we carried the objects we made and walked on Oxford Street on Friday.。---
