(Dallas, TX)According to the 2003 NAAB Statistical Report, approximately 2,300 international students were enrolled in accredited architecture degree programs, roughly 450 of whom will graduate this spring. Today's issue of ArchVoices is for those international students, many of whom are preparing to enter the U.S. workforce. Landing a good job right out of school is a challenge for any graduate, but the hiring process for non-U.S. citizens involves a number of additional steps.During our research for this issue, Ralph Hawkins of HKS noted that, "Employers are missing out on some of the best graduates if they think it's just too difficult to hire international students." HKS is a large firm, however, and Hawkins hires international students upon graduation with some regularity. In contrast, smaller firms are likely to be far less experienced with the process of helping graduating students secure a work visa or fearful of incurring some liability as a result.In that regard, the following information is also intended as a resource for employers in all firm sizes. We have also heard stories of firms and individuals that have been less than forthcoming about the realities of the process for graduates. Whether done out of ignorance or self-interest, today's issue should help provide wider access to better information. For that reason, we encourage you to share these resources with others.
