实践中，可能外国人与我们也差不多吧，一本书出来，总得找个名人写个序什么的。
当然，也有不同，与国人学术著作一概关注作序者的名气相比，外人似乎更为注重作序者在这圈子里的学术分量（这是我自己瞎猜的，声明一下）。
像弗兰普敦这么大名鼎鼎的学者，他的《建构文化研究》请了一个叫做Mallgrave的人来干这个活。
Harry Francis Mallgrave, trained as an architect and received his Ph.D. from the University of Pennsylvania, is the editor of architecture and aesthetics for the Getty Research Institute's Texts & Documents series and the Willard K. Martin Distinguished Visiting Professor at the University of Oregon. 此人似乎先由翻译散普尔与瓦格纳的著作起家。
先是瓦格纳的《现代建筑》由他在90年之后译为英文，Modern Architecture, A Guidebook for His Students to This Field of Art, Otto Wagner. （Introduction and translation by Harry Francis Mallgrave.）此书1988年由Getty Center for the History of Art and the Humanities出版。
第二年，他的The four elements of architecture and other writings, Gottfried Semper, (translated by Harry Francis Mallgrave and Wolfgang Herrmann）也接着出版。
他为这两本译著都写了不短的前言。
除此，还为其他一些文集比如Empathy, Form, and Space: Problems in German Aesthetics, 1873-1893. （Translation and introduction by Eleftherios Ikonomou and Harry Francis Mallgrave. Santa Monica, CA: Getty Center for the History of Art and the Humanities; [Chicago, Ill.]: Distributed by the University of Chicago Press, c1994.）写了前言。
